The UN - Uninvolved in Africa
A friend of mine recently showed me this picture from the Februrary 2007 edition of Go Magazine. I found it quite thought provoking.

Its Purpose: to raise awareness of current social, political, ethical, and spiritual issues within a relief and development context in Liberia. Its effectiveness is simple: It relies on me, the author, to provide insightful, and often debate-sparking material that will encourage you, the reader to get engaged through comment contributions, emails, and promoting others to read, re-think, and respond to the important issues discussed.

Is the UN doing anything there? News of your country faded from the US news after Taylor left the country. We never hear about Africa unless it has to do with oil or something.
Thanks for the look inside.

One thing I do respect the UN doing here in Liberia is being a military presence, especially through the tense election period in late 05.
As far as being a coordinating body for humanitarian work I wouldn't say they're uninvolved but arguably questionable.

It is too bad the UN lacks real power to effect true change in Africa.

I like how everyone bashes the UN as if they're doing nothing when they are the only organizational body right now within the relief world that's able to do what they do operations-wise. Not always perfect by any stretch of imagination but people always get a little smug when talking about the UN.

yeah, that's about right... are you following the current debacle with the refugees in ghana? no blame if you aren't-- there's no news outlets in the west covering it. i've been trying to get my liberian journalist friend's article published and all i hear is, "hmm.. well, it hasn't come through on the wire."
